Apple iPhone 17e Quietly Launched: No Surprise, but AI Got More "Fragrant"?

Apple quietly launched iPhone 17e — this is the first "budget" iPhone with AI capabilities. No launch event, no CEO presentation, but may be an important attempt.

Apple iPhone 17e Quietly Launched: No Surprise, but AI Got More "Fragrant"?

Silicon Valley — No launch event, no CEO presentation, no flashbulbs.

Apple quietly launched iPhone 17e on its website — another "budget" iPhone after iPhone SE.

But this time, the budget version has AI capabilities.

Evolution of "Budget Version"

iPhone 17e starts at $599, $200 cheaper than standard iPhone 17.

"This isn't a replacement for iPhone SE," Apple wrote on product page. "This is another choice for iPhone experience."

In terms of specs, iPhone 17e uses previous generation A17 chip (same as iPhone 15 Pro), but for the first time on a budget iPhone, it has an AI processing unit.

"This means you can experience most AI features at half price," a tech blogger analyzed. "Including AI photography, AI background removal, AI writing assistance, etc."

AI: Apple's New "Killer Feature"

Actually, iPhone 17e's biggest highlight isn't hardware, but AI.

According to Apple, iPhone 17e supports these AI features:

AI Smart Photo Edit: One-tap crowd removal, lighting optimization

AI Voice Assistant: Understand complex commands, execute multi-step tasks

AI Real-time Translation: Supports 20 languages, works offline

AI Health Management: Provides health advice based on user habits

"These features were only on Pro models before," the blogger said. "Now even entry-level iPhone can use them."

"Rural Surrounding Cities"?

Industry analysis suggests Apple launching budget AI iPhone may be "rural surrounding cities" strategy.

"AI phones are the future trend," an industry analyst said. "But if only high-end users can experience it, how do we popularize?"

Let more users experience AI features through budget iPhone, cultivate user habits, then guide users to "upgrade" to Pro models — this is Apple's strategy.

"Like the App Store back then," the analyst added. "First get enough people using it, then make money from them."

Android's Pressure

But Apple's strategy faces Android challenges.

Samsung, Google, Xiaomi entry-level phones already have AI features, and at lower prices.

"Android AI phones have dropped to 1,500 RMB ($200) price point," a phone industry person said. "Apple's $599 (~$4,000 RMB) is still too expensive."

However, he acknowledged Apple's AI experience is still best: "Software-hardware integration isn't something Android can catch up with quickly."

China Market's Special Circumstances

iPhone 17e's fate in China market may be different.

Due to no AI partner (Apple originally wanted to use Baidu Ernie, but cooperation seems stalled), China version iPhone 17e's AI features may be "阉割" (crippled).

"This is a challenge for sales," a channel dealer said. "Chinese consumers buying AI phones don't want 'crippled versions.'"

Epilogue

On Apple's website, I carefully looked at iPhone 17e product page. One detail is interesting:

"iPhone 17e is designed to let more people experience Apple Intelligence."

This sentence reminds me of iPhone's "rural包围城市" strategy back then — from few geeks to mass market.

Perhaps this is Apple's intention: turning AI from "high-end toy" to "mass consumer product."
