Barcelona — If you still think MediaTek is just the "budget phone chip" maker, MWC 2026 might change your mind.

At the 2026 Mobile World Congress, MediaTek took the stage with "AI for Life: From Edge to Cloud," showcasing breakthroughs in 6G, Wi-Fi 8, and AI chip UCIe interconnect. The company once suppressed by Qualcomm and Apple is redefining its industry position with technical strength.

From "Laggard" to "Leader"

Time shift to five years ago.

In 2021, MediaTek surpassed Qualcomm in global phone chip market share for the first time, becoming the largest chip supplier by shipments. But industry still questioned: MediaTek chips mainly served mid-to-low-end phones; high-end remained Qualcomm and Apple's domain.

"We were indeed catching up back then," MediaTek CEO admitted in a post-keynote interview. "But over the past three years, we've completed the transition from follower to leader."

This transformation centers on R&D investment. According to MediaTek data, 2025 R&D reached $4.5 billion, over 25% of revenue — almost unmatched in the chip industry.

"First-Mover" in 6G Era

MediaTek's most attention-grabbing showcase at MWC: 6G technology prototype.

"We expect 6G commercial deployment around 2029-2030," MediaTek's wireless communications head said in his keynote. "But R&D needs to start 5-8 years earlier. We've been researching 6G since 2021."

Specifically, MediaTek showcased key 6G technologies:

AI-Native Air Interface: Replacing traditional signal processing with AI algorithms

Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces: Dynamically adjusting signal paths to solve coverage gaps

Integrated Sensing and Communication: Base stations providing both communication and radar sensing

"These aren't PPTs — we have prototypes that can be demonstrated live," the executive said. "Partner operators can test them in our labs."

Wi-Fi 8: "Monopoly Breaker"

Beyond 6G, MediaTek also showcased Wi-Fi 8 technology.

Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn) is the next-generation Wi-Fi standard, expected to launch commercially in 2027-2028. Compared to Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 8 offers 50% peak speed improvement, 30% latency reduction, and support for more concurrent devices.

"The Wi-Fi 8 market is projected at $30 billion," MediaTek's connectivity head said. "We don't just want to be a participant — we want to be a key force in standard-setting."

UCIe: The "Interconnect Revolution" for AI Chips

Most importantly: UCIe (Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express) technology.

Simply put, UCIe enables different chips to "seamlessly stitch" together. Like LEGO blocks, chips from different vendors can efficiently combine and work together.

"In the AI era, single chips can't meet compute demands anymore," MediaTek's AI computing head explained. "We need multiple chips 'stitched' together. UCIe is the standard solving this problem."

MediaTek has already signed UCIe cooperation agreements with multiple AI chip vendors.

From "Cost Performance" to "Technology Leadership"

Back to the CEO's interview.

"Over the past decade, many thought MediaTek's only advantage was 'cost performance,'" he said. "That narrative should be outdated now. Our technical strength — whether 6G, Wi-Fi 8, or UCIe — leads the industry."
