Microsoft Copilot Overhaul: Windows Goes Fully AI, PC Industry Sees "Second Revolution
Microsoft announces major Copilot upgrade at MWC 2026. Windows will natively integrate AI capabilities. From system foundation to application layer, AI will be everywhere. The PC industry is experiencing its "second revolution" since the PC era.
Barcelona — March 3, Microsoft announced a major Copilot upgrade at MWC 2026. Windows will natively integrate AI capabilities. From system底层 to application layer, AI will be everywhere. The PC industry is experiencing its "second revolution" since the PC era.
From "Operating System" to "AI Operating System"
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in his keynote: "We are redefining what an operating system is."
Specifically, Windows 26 (expected 2027 release) will include:
AI system layer: AI models run directly in system kernel, no additional GPU needed
AI application layer: All built-in apps natively integrate AI capabilities
AI interaction layer: Natural language can directly operate the system
AI security layer: AI monitors system security in real-time, predicts and blocks threats

"Traditional Windows is a 'tool,' AI Windows is an 'assistant,'" Nadella said. "It knows what you want and prepares it for you in advance."
Copilot: From Assistant to "Second Brain"
The new Copilot is no longer just an answering assistant but evolves into the user's "second brain":
Proactive suggestions: Prepares needed files, data, apps in advance based on user habits
Cross-app coordination: Coordinates different apps to complete complex tasks
Learning users: Understands user work style, automatically optimizes workflows
Privacy first: Most AI processing done locally, data not uploaded to cloud

"Copilot will become a core component of Windows, like the Start menu back in the day," said Microsoft's OS division head. "Essential."
PC Hardware: AI Chips Become Standard
What does Copilot's upgrade mean? It means AI chips will become "standard" for PCs.
AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm all showcased latest AI PC chips at MWC. These chips are specifically for accelerating local AI inference — no internet needed, can run large language models locally.
"AI PC market size expected to reach $20 billion in 2027," a semiconductor analyst said. "PCs without AI chips will be like phones without cameras — almost unsellable."
Traditional PC Manufacturers' Opportunities and Challenges
For traditional PC manufacturers, this is both opportunity and challenge.
Opportunity: AI PCs have higher average selling prices, greater profit margins Challenge: Need integration capabilities for software + hardware + AI
Lenovo, HP, and Dell all showcased AI PC product lines at MWC. But software ecosystem integration capability will become the key differentiator.
"Hardware can stack specs, but software experience is what users really care about," a PC industry veteran said.
Opportunity for Chinese Manufacturers
For Chinese PC manufacturers, the AI PC wave is both opportunity and challenge.
Opportunity: China is one of the largest PC markets, local manufacturers have channel advantages Challenge: AI chip supply chain may be affected by US-China relations
"Key is software ecosystem integration capability," the expert said. "Hardware copy is easy, but software experience requires accumulation."
Epilogue
At Microsoft's booth, a visitor told media: "Using the new Copilot, I suddenly realized — before, I was operating the computer; now, the computer is 'helping' me operate."
This experience shift, as Nadella said: "AI won't replace humans, but it will redefine the relationship between humans and computers."
